Compare and Contrast Paragraph
Both Joseph and Skeeter suffer isolation from their peers. The isolated protagonists show patience and calm in counteracting their ill treatment. Joseph is isolated from his classmates whereas Skeeter is snubbed by her friends. In New Boy, Joseph calmly accepts the situation and bides his time, waiting an appropriate moment to retaliate. Similarly, Skeeter, the central character in The Help works patiently and secretly towards a moment when she can show the community that she does not accept their behaviour. Her isolation, although caused by Hilly is also her own choice as her values are completely different from the group of girls she used to associate with. However, Joseph's longer term outlook is more positive as his actions result in his becoming accepted by the community who originally shunned him. In both stories, the community shows their ignorance by causing the individual to be isolated and none of the characters have the compassion to reach out to support the person who is suffering the isolation. Isolation can be painful but each protagonist shows us the power of isolation if dealt with patiently.
